AXIAN Energy, a renewable energy developer operating across Africa, has secured a grant of approximately $1 million from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) to support the expansion of clean energy projects on the continent.

The company disclosed on Tuesday, January 20, that the funding will be used to finance early-stage development work on multiple renewable energy projects across Africa.

The grant comes at a time when access to institutional backing at the project development stage is increasingly seen as critical for African developers seeking to unlock the continent’s vast renewable energy potential, particularly in solar power.

According to AXIAN Energy, the funding is expected to accelerate project development activities in Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique and Sierra Leone, countries where demand for additional electricity generation capacity remains high.

The company has emerged as a growing player in utility-scale solar development across Africa. In Zambia, AXIAN Energy is currently developing a 54 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant as part of its expansion into Southern Africa.

In Senegal, the firm launched construction of the 60 MW NEA Kolda solar plant in 2025, one of the flagship projects under the country’s national solar programme.

AXIAN Energy has also received backing from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), which has supported efforts to strengthen the company’s renewable energy project pipeline.

The latest funding reflects broader trends in global energy investment, with the power sector attracting the largest share of capital, even as Africa continues to face significant gaps in electricity access and generation capacity.
