CNG Trucks for Dangote Refinery’s Fuel Distribution Begin Arriving Ahead of August Rollout

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has begun receiving 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered trucks, a major step in its nationwide fuel distribution programme set to commence on August 15.

Valued at N720 billion, the fleet represents a significant investment aimed at transforming Nigeria’s fuel logistics by cutting distribution costs, improving supply efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.

Imported via Apapa Port, the first batch of tankers has arrived at the refinery site in Ibeju-Lekki, where they were officially received by Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Ltd. The arrival drew positive reactions from refinery staff, customers, and members of the public who praised the initiative’s potential to ease long-standing distribution challenges.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief of Branding and Communication at Dangote Industries Limited, described the move as “a groundbreaking development in Nigeria’s fuel distribution network”, highlighting ongoing collaboration with regulators to ensure smooth deployment nationwide.

Over the next six weeks, at least 60 shiploads of trucks are expected. This new CNG-powered model is projected to save Nigerians over N1.7 trillion annually in fuel distribution costs and lower operational expenses for more than 42 million MSMEs.

The programme is also expected to create over 15,000 direct jobs in the logistics chain, revitalise dormant filling stations, curb cross-border fuel smuggling, and promote energy efficiency.

Tosin Coker, Commercial Coordinator of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), hailed the move as a strategic milestone, affirming that “CNG is now a present, practical solution to high energy costs, emissions, and supply chain challenges.”
