CGC Adeniyi Announces Mandatory Drug Test for Recruits, Officers

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has ordered mandatory drug testing for all new recruits in the ongoing Nigeria Customs Service recruitment exercise.

Speaking at the closing session of the CGC’s 2025 Conference in Abuja on Friday, 21 November 2025, Adeniyi said the measure is necessary to ensure that no recruit enters the Service with substance-abuse tendencies capable of impairing judgment or compromising national security operations.

Adeniyi added that serving officers will also undergo screening as part of efforts to transform the Nigeria Customs Service into a fully drug-free institution. The tests will cover personnel across all Zones, Commands and units, including Headquarters.

He revealed that recent incidents of erratic behaviour and poor decision-making linked to substance misuse prompted the directive. The CGC stressed that the Service will no longer tolerate situations where officers make sensitive operational decisions under the influence of drugs.

Adeniyi urged officers to prioritise physical and mental health, adding that medical fitness is crucial for effective and responsible service delivery.
