The Managing Director of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), Ms. Usoro Akpabio, has applauded the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, for the sweeping reforms he has implemented in the Commission over the past two years.

Akpabio gave the commendation on Thursday, September 11, 2025, during a courtesy visit to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja alongside the SSDC management team. She praised the EFCC’s strengthened framework of accountability, integrity, and transparency, while expressing readiness to partner with the agency on compliance and anti-corruption initiatives.

“We are here to say we want to collaborate with you. We are open to initiatives and training from the EFCC, especially in ensuring all our internal and external activities embrace full compliance. This will not only benefit the commission but also strengthen our regional integrity,” Akpabio said.

Board Endorsement of Reforms

Adding his voice, SSDC board member representing Cross River State, Larry Odey, described Olukoyede’s leadership as “a watershed moment,” noting that his tenure has raised the bar for transparency and accountability. “There are clear indications everywhere that you are set to change the narratives. I implore you and your team to continue the good work,” Odey said.

Olukoyede’s Call for Integrity

In his remarks, Olukoyede urged the SSDC team to set a new benchmark for governance in the Niger Delta, stressing the importance of integrity, accountability, and transparency. He warned that without these values, public trust and effective service delivery would be impossible. “He that comes to equity must come with clean hands,” he said.

The EFCC boss reminded the SSDC of the dire poverty in the oil-rich region despite its resources. He urged the commission to ensure that recovered funds and allocations are applied transparently and visibly. “Design your website, publish your projects, and let people verify. That’s how you can leave a legacy. Don’t follow the route of others,” he cautioned.

Guidance and Collaboration

Olukoyede also advised Akpabio and her team to familiarize themselves with Nigeria’s financial regulations and the Public Procurement Act to safeguard against mismanagement. “Make sure there is value for every dime you spend and every contract you award. Take your time before you put your signature on any paper,” he said.

He pledged EFCC’s support and collaboration to help SSDC deliver on its mandate to improve the lives of people across the six states of the Niger Delta region. “You have been put in place to serve the people. Ensure transparency and accountability from day one, and you will make your impact felt,” he added.
