The Federal Government has declared Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26, 2025, as well as Thursday, January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
In a statement, the minister extended festive greetings to Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora, while also wishing all Nigerians a peaceful and joyful end-of-year celebration.
Mr. Tunji-Ojo urged Christians to reflect on the core values associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, including love, peace, humility and sacrifice, noting that these virtues are essential for promoting national unity, tolerance and harmony.
He also called on Nigerians, irrespective of religion or ethnicity, to use the festive period to pray for peace, improved security and national progress, while continuing to support the government’s efforts at strengthening cohesion and development.
“The Christmas season and the New Year present an opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen the bonds of unity, show compassion to one another, and renew our collective commitment to nation-building,” the minister said.
Mr. Tunji-Ojo further advised citizens to celebrate responsibly, remain law-abiding and security-conscious, and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive season across the country.
He wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
