The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in a strategic move to expand electricity access and accelerate sustainable development across the Niger Delta.

The agreement, signed at the REA headquarters in Abuja, signals a coordinated push by both federal interventionist agencies to deploy reliable and renewable energy solutions to underserved communities in the oil-rich region.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, described the partnership as a milestone in institutional collaboration aimed at delivering tangible development outcomes.

“This ceremony represents more than the signing of a document; it symbolises a shared institutional responsibility to deliver reliable energy solutions that improve livelihoods, strengthen local economies, and expand opportunities for communities across the nine Niger Delta states,” Ogbuku said.

He noted that the collaboration aligns with the Commission’s strategic vision to “light up the Niger Delta” and complements national priorities on distributed energy expansion.

“Electricity remains a critical enabler of national development, supporting job creation, healthcare delivery, education and inclusive economic growth,” he stated, adding that the partnership would help unlock the economic potential of rural communities in the region.

Ogbuku emphasised that the NDDC would leverage its strong community presence, planning expertise and infrastructure development framework to ensure effective implementation of the MoU.

“We are ready to support the implementation of this agreement and work closely with the REA to ensure timely and impactful delivery,” he assured.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of the REA, Dr Abba Abubakar Aliyu, described the agreement as a natural collaboration between two agencies with complementary mandates.

“This is more than a document. It is a clear statement of readiness from the NDDC to move decisively in delivering reliable and sustainable power to communities that have waited too long for stable electricity,” Aliyu said.

He stressed that expanding access to electricity in the Niger Delta would stimulate enterprise, improve social services and enhance livelihoods.

“The Niger Delta is central to Nigeria’s economic story, and its development must be supported by infrastructure that enables productivity, enterprise and dignity,” he added.

Aliyu commended Ogbuku for his leadership in driving the partnership forward, expressing confidence that the collaboration would fast-track electrification efforts in rural and underserved communities across the region.

The MoU marks a renewed push to bridge the power access gap in the Niger Delta, with both agencies pledging sustained cooperation to deliver reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
