The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has invited Egypt to provide technical expertise and support as Nigeria pushes forward with new oil and gas development projects.

Strengthening Bilateral Energy Ties

During a recent visit to Cairo, NNPCL executives met with Salah Abdel Kerim, Chairman of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), to explore ways of deepening cooperation. Both sides agreed to expand joint efforts in project development, refining operations, and technical training.

The partnership builds on Egypt’s strong track record across Africa, particularly through Egyptian Projects Operation and Maintenance (EPROM), which already supports Nigeria’s Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri refineries.

Egyptian Expertise for Nigerian Projects

According to Abdel Kerim, Egypt’s petroleum companies are ready to offer support across all phases of project development — from design and implementation to management and maintenance. Key Egyptian firms set to contribute include:

  • ENPPI – Engineering for the Petroleum and Process Industries
  • PETROJET – Petroleum Projects and Technical Consultations Company
  • EPROM – Refinery operations and maintenance
  • Sonker – Petroleum logistics and infrastructure

Abdel Kerim also proposed holding a joint workshop to identify new areas of collaboration and knowledge transfer.

Refinery and Gas Opportunities

The Nigerian delegation, led by Mumuni Dagazau, NNPCL’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, presented updates on Nigeria’s refinery projects and highlighted opportunities for Egyptian involvement. These include:

  • Training and upskilling Nigerian technical staff
  • Expanding refinery operations and maintenance
  • Establishing natural gas fueling stations
  • Converting vehicles to run on natural gas

Discussions also covered potential collaborations with Gastec and Car Gas to scale up natural gas adoption in Nigeria.

Pathway for Future Growth

With NNPCL already operating across Nigeria and the UK in exploration, gas development, refining, and petrochemicals, the new partnership with Egypt could provide a significant boost to Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and capacity. Analysts say the move underscores Abuja’s intent to blend local resources with international expertise for sustainable growth.
