NiMet, AATF Partner to Boost Climate-Resilient Farming in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance climate-resilient agriculture across Nigeria.

The agreement, formalized at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, will see both organizations collaborate on developing climate-smart weather tools, building farmers’ capacity, and promoting technologies that safeguard agricultural value chains from the impacts of climate change.

NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the partnership as a crucial step toward equipping farmers with timely and accurate climate information. “For agriculture to thrive in a changing climate, farmers must have reliable weather and climate data. This collaboration with AATF enables us to merge our strengths to deliver practical, life-changing solutions,” he said.

Dr. Jean Baptiste Tignegre, AATF’s Regional Director, stressed the foundation’s commitment to removing barriers that prevent smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa from accessing transformative technologies. He noted that the partnership would help Nigerian farmers better adapt to climate challenges while boosting food security and livelihoods.

Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Developing climate-smart weather tools for women- and youth-led agricultural MSMEs
  • Capacity building on climate-smart agricultural practices
  • Providing technical support in targeted project locations
  • Jointly creating funding proposals for climate-smart technologies

The MoU, which runs until January 31, 2028, outlines frameworks for transparent project execution and coordinated planning. Both organizations remain committed to enhancing farmers’ resilience, strengthening agricultural value chains, and contributing to sustainable food security nationwide.
