NNPC/Heirs Energies JV Breaks Ground, Adds Over 135 MMscf/d to Nigeria’s Domestic Gas Supply

The NNPC/Heirs Energies Joint Venture (JV) has achieved a major breakthrough with the rigless recompletion of a key non-associated gas well in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 17, doubling the JV’s gas output to a peak of 135 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d). The intervention strengthens domestic gas supply and advances Nigeria’s energy security.
Boosting Power Generation Across Eastern Nigeria
Transcorp PLC – TransAfam Power, one of Nigeria’s leading generation plants, increased output from an average of 50 megawatts to more than 180 megawatts, reaching peaks of 200 megawatts. Other plants supplied by the network, including First Independent Power Limited (FIPL) and Geometric Power, have reported more stable operations and higher generation.
Overall, combined output from power plants receiving gas from the JV surged from around 100 megawatts to more than 350 megawatts, providing sufficient energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, support hospitals and schools, and sustain industrial operations.
High-Level Recognition for Technical Innovation
Mrs. Olu Verheijen, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, praised the achievement in a letter to Heirs Energies CEO Osa Igiehon, highlighting the ingenuity of Nigerian engineering and offering continued support for future operations.
Rigless Recompletion: Cost-Effective and Efficient
The well had previously been shut in due to excessive water production. Instead of drilling a new well, Heirs Energies performed a rigless through-tubing recompletion into an untapped reservoir interval. Completed safely, in record time, and at just 15% of the cost of a new well, the operation sets a benchmark for rigless solutions in Nigeria’s upstream sector.
Commitment to National Gas-to-Power Agenda
Udy Ntia, Executive Vice President, Upstream, NNPC, said the project demonstrates NNPC’s dedication to unlocking the nation’s gas resources for national development. Engr. Seyi Omotowa, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NUIMS, described it as a model for innovative, safe, and value-driven upstream operations.
Osa Igiehon, CEO of Heirs Energies, noted: “This milestone reflects the ingenuity and resilience of our 100% Nigerian workforce. We remain committed to supporting Nigeria’s gas-to-power agenda through innovation-led, responsible upstream operations.”
