The NNPC/Renaissance Joint Venture, JV, has provided a significant boost to Nigeria’s cancer treatment efforts with a $300,000 donation to the National Hospital, Abuja, to support maintenance of its advanced cancer treatment machine.

The state-of-the-art Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Radiotherapy Machine, originally donated by the JV in 2019 under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, has become a critical lifeline for cancer patients nationwide. The initial project included upgrading the cancer treatment ecosystem, installing essential data and support systems, and training healthcare professionals to operate the sophisticated equipment.

Speaking at the office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, the Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Engr. Oluwaseyi Omotowa—represented by the Head of Business Services, NNPC-NUIMS, Nkechi Anaedobe—highlighted key achievements made possible by the intervention.

These include the treatment of over 2,000 patients, an 80% reduction in treatment costs, a reduction in therapy session time from 12 minutes to just 2 minutes, and subsidised treatment for 712 indigent patients, who received discounts ranging from 25% to 100%.

“The sustainability of such advanced medical technology hinges on regular maintenance, which presents a critical challenge due to funding constraints. Recognizing this, the NNPC Limited / Renaissance JV and partners is today taking a strategic step forward,” Omotowa stated.

He noted that the fresh donation would ensure timely maintenance, minimize downtime, guarantee rapid response during machine issues, ensure compliance with medical standards, and maintain precise calibration necessary for effective radiotherapy.

“As we move forward, the JV promises to continue to forge partnerships that address immediate healthcare needs while building a strong foundation for future medical advancements. Together, we are not just treating illnesses; we are fostering a healthier, more resilient nation,” he added.

Minister Pate Commends the Gesture

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammed Ali Pate, described the intervention as exemplary and urged other industry players to emulate the JV. He emphasized that the donation would significantly enhance access to affordable cancer care.

“This aligns perfectly with the broader efforts to revamp critical healthcare infrastructure. Quality healthcare comes at a cost, and with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed focus on health sector investment, partnerships like this significantly strengthen the cause,” Pate said.

National Hospital Applauds Lifeline for Cancer Patients

Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Muhammad Raji Mahmud, applauded the gesture, calling it a lifeline for thousands of cancer patients who rely on the facility every year.

“At the National Hospital Cancer Centre, we treat thousands of patients annually. The support from NNPC Limited and Renaissance has profoundly improved in-country cancer care, reduced medical tourism, and strengthened national capacity,” Mahmud said.

Renaissance Reaffirms Commitment to Health Innovation

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable healthcare and innovation in cancer treatment.

“This is not charity. This is a strategic investment in the well-being of Nigerians, in the resilience of our health systems, and in the shared future we all strive to build,” Attah stated, noting that a healthy population is vital to national development.
