NNPC Urges African Unity in Refining for Energy Security
NNPC Ltd. has called on African nations to collaborate on refining development and value chain retention to secure the continent’s energy future.
Call for Continental Action
Dr. Mumuni Dagazau, Executive Vice President, Downstream, at NNPC Ltd., issued the call during the Africa Refining Roundtable held in Accra, Ghana.
He urged African governments and industry leaders to deepen cooperation, invest in infrastructure, and retain more value across the continent’s energy chain.
“Africa must recognise its potential and act strategically,” Dagazau said. “Value addition must stay on the continent — through skills, infrastructure, and collaboration.”
Refining Capacity as a Strategic Imperative
Themed “Innovative Solutions for Boosting Production and Strengthening Energy Security”, the roundtable was organised by the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) and Honeywell UOP.
It featured sessions on Human Capital Development, Project Finance, Investment, Technology, and Execution.
Dagazau emphasised the importance of refining capacity not just in scale, but in sustainability.
“What Africa needs is not just more refineries,” he said. “We need the knowledge, funding, and partnerships to build sustainable, future-ready systems.”
Backing Africa’s Energy Transition
Dagazau reaffirmed NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to the African Energy Transition Roadmap, pledging support for regional cooperation, skills transfer, and technical innovation.
“No country can do it alone,” he said. “To succeed, we must share insights and overcome financing gaps together.”
Cross-Sector Collaboration Highlighted
The event brought together leaders from national oil companies, private refiners, financial institutions, and tech providers from across the continent.
The discussions underscored the urgency of aligning Africa’s refining ambitions with the global push for cleaner, more resilient energy systems.
