NPA’s MD Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho Appointed Vice-President for Africa at IAPH
Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has been elected Vice-President for Africa of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH). This milestone underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in the global maritime industry.
The IAPH, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has been a leading global trade association representing seaports worldwide since 1955. Dr. Dantsoho’s election took place during a high-level meeting in Tokyo. This achievement follows his earlier milestone as the first Nigerian to lead the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA) since 1972.
“This appointment is a recognition of Nigeria’s revitalized leadership in maritime development,” said Ikechukwu Onyemekara, General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communications at NPA. The IAPH Secretary-General, Masahiko Furuichi, also expressed optimism about collaborating with Dantsoho in advancing global port policies.
Key Achievements Under Dantsoho’s Leadership
- 19.59% increase in non-oil exports to $3.225 billion in the first half of 2025.
- Export volumes reached 4.04 million metric tonnes on NPA-managed platforms.
- Contribution to Nigeria achieving a trade surplus, as recognized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).
IAPH’s Global Role
The IAPH network spans over 190 seaports and 167 port-related businesses across 89 countries, managing more than 60% of global seaborne trade and container traffic. The association works with organizations like the International Maritime Organization (IMO), World Customs Organization (WCO), and the United Nations to shape maritime policy and promote sustainable port operations.
What This Means for Nigeria
Dr. Dantsoho’s appointment strengthens Nigeria’s position in influencing global port policies and driving trade efficiency, port resilience, and sustainable growth within the maritime sector.
