Oriental Renaissance Commends Geometric Power, ASERA For Sustainable Electricity Supply

Oriental Renaissance, a non-governmental organisation, has applauded the efficiency of electricity supply and regulatory reforms implemented by Geometric Power Ltd and the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERA), describing them as catalysts for business development in Abia State.

The group gave a positive public verdict on the facilities and operations of Geometric Power, Nigeria’s foremost integrated power group, following an independent appraisal and recent visit. It also commended the newly established ASERA for inspiring public confidence through its regulatory approach.

The assessment followed recent reports quoting ASERA leadership as describing Aba Power, a member of the Geometric Power Group, as setting the benchmark by which the other 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) in Nigeria would now be measured.

ASERA’s Leadership Visit

The ASERA delegation to Geometric Power was led by its Executive Chairman, Engr. Emeka Onyegbule, alongside the Executive Director, Legal and Regulatory Matters, Iguwo Ukwu, and the Executive Director, Engineering and Technical Affairs, Iheanyi Weze.

In a press statement signed by its President, Dr. Richard Ogbonna, and Secretary, Barrister Uche Nwosu, Oriental Renaissance noted that by making its positive evaluation public, ASERA demonstrated an understanding of the modern role of regulators in promoting businesses while safeguarding public interest.

“By making its positive evaluation public, the ASERA leadership has shown that it understands the duties of a regulator and how to promote businesses in their various sectors in the modern world,” the statement read.

Regulation Beyond Punishment

The group observed that in the past, many Nigerian regulatory agencies focused primarily on punishing businesses, often publicising sanctions, while neglecting to encourage organisations that complied with standards.

It cited the example of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) under the late Professor Dora Akunyili, noting that while the agency disciplined counterfeit manufacturers, it also actively promoted compliant companies such as Nigerian Breweries Plc, May & Baker and Nemeith Pharmaceuticals Plc.

According to Oriental Renaissance, ASERA’s public endorsement of Geometric Power mirrors that balanced regulatory approach.

“Let it be stated for the umpteenth time that regulatory bodies are set up principally to promote businesses in various sectors, and not to harm them. Regulators protect the interests of all stakeholders — consumers, government and businesses alike,” the group stated.

Boost to Abia’s Investment Drive

The NGO further remarked that ASERA’s stance appears to validate Governor Alex Otti’s assertion that Abia is ready for business, referencing the reported interest of global hospitality brands such as Marriott and Radisson in establishing major presences in Aba and other parts of the state.

It also highlighted the multibillion-naira Enyimba Economic City project, modeled after major Chinese commercial hubs, as evidence of growing investor confidence.

According to the group, consistent and quality electricity supply across the nine local government areas in the Aba Ring-fenced Area represents a transformative milestone for industrial growth and economic stability in the region.

Oriental Renaissance urged regulators nationwide to maintain a balanced approach — enforcing compliance where necessary while encouraging innovation and excellence — to foster sustainable sectoral development across Nigeria.
