More than 10 passengers have been confirmed dead after an 18-seater bus conveying mourners to the burial of Bayelsa State’s late Deputy Governor crashed along the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road.

Tragedy struck in Bayelsa State as an 18-seater bus conveying passengers to the burial of the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was involved in a fatal road accident.

The crash occurred along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama–Ekeremor Road, a major route in the area, claiming the lives of more than 10 passengers, according to initial reports.

Multiple Casualties Recorded

Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.

Eyewitnesses described the accident as severe, with rescue efforts carried out by local residents and emergency responders.

Victims En Route to Burial Ceremony

The victims were traveling to attend the burial of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away suddenly on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60 after collapsing in his office at the Government House in Yenagoa.

His burial was scheduled for today, January 30, 2026, in his hometown of Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area, following a series of funeral rites.

Earlier funeral activities included a Day of Tributes attended by high-profile dignitaries, including former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, and former Governor Seriake Dickson.

Authorities have expressed condolences to the families of the deceased while investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
