Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced a short break from public engagements following illness in Enugu. Obi shared the update via his official X handle, stating that doctors advised him to rest for a day or two after receiving treatment.

“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days rest. In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend. I sincerely apologise for any inconveniences this might cause and humbly plead for understanding,” Obi said.

Health Project Donation

Prior to announcing his temporary withdrawal, Obi participated in a tourism event in Enugu and donated ₦10 million to support the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria. The Diocese plans to revitalize Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Orumba South LGA, transforming it into a health complex with a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology.

“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence,” Obi said.

Political Gatherings

After visiting Anambra, Obi travelled to Owerri, Imo State for a dinner in honour of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, organised by barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu.

Facing Scrutiny

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, highlighted the scrutiny Obi faces in Nigerian politics, noting it stems from the transformative agenda he represents rather than personal matters. Tanko defended Obi against misinformation and past controversies, including financial allegations and a viral video of Obi serving food at a public event.

Party Politics and Integrity

Tanko confirmed Obi remains a Labour Party member while working in alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of 2027, clarifying that he does not hold membership in two parties. He praised Obi’s integrity as a rare quality in Nigerian politics.

Popular Appeal

Despite challenges, Tanko emphasized Obi’s broad support across Nigeria: “The strongest tool Peter Obi has is the Nigerian people. He’s the only candidate as of today that can give you a block vote of Nigerians without shaking. He remains to be challenged,” he said.
