The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State, Mr. Charles Wobodo, has urged residents of Ozuaha, Omademe and Ipo communities to take collective responsibility for safeguarding electricity infrastructure in their areas to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Wobodo made the call while flagging off Phase II of the electricity reconnection initiative in Omademe, stressing that the sustainability of the project depends largely on community ownership and vigilance.

He encouraged the affected communities to establish functional electricity committees that would oversee proper facility management, ensure compliance with regulations and promote prompt payment of electricity bills.

“My predecessor invested substantial funds to provide electricity across the LGA, but those efforts were sabotaged by agents of darkness,” Wobodo said.

“We are committed to ensuring the contractor completes this project. Stable electricity supply will boost economic activities and attract investors to our area.”

The council chairman warned that his administration would not tolerate vandalism, lawlessness or any actions capable of undermining the success of the electricity reconnection programme.

The Special Guest of Honour at the event, Engr. Samuel Nwanosike, Chairman of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), commended Wobodo for what he described as notable achievements within his first 100 days in office.

Nwanosike urged traditional rulers and Community Development Committee (CDC) chairmen to take active roles in protecting electricity facilities, adding that community participation was critical to long-term development.

He also encouraged residents to take advantage of the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registration exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hon. Kachi Wonodi, Councillor representing Omademe Ward, expressed appreciation for the project, voicing confidence that the success recorded in Omagwa Phase I would be replicated in Omademe Phase II.

Similarly, the CDC Chairman of Omademe, Dr. Cyprian Amaechi, said the reconnection of electricity had restored dignity and development to the communities, strengthening public confidence in government.

Chief Livingston Amadi, Chairman of the Omademe Council of Traditional Rulers, alongside Chief Chimene Amadi, Chairman of the Ozuaha Council of Chiefs, praised the council chairman for fostering unity and development, assuring him of continued political support.

Also speaking, Hon. Prince Lemchi Nyeche, Member representing Ikwerre State Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, reaffirmed his commitment to his constituents despite the ongoing Assembly crisis.

He disclosed that he personally facilitated the construction of a town hall project in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The flag-off ceremony featured the presentation of kola nuts by traditional rulers, cultural performances and was attended by stakeholders, youths and community leaders from across the local government area.

The electricity reconnection initiative highlights the Ikwerre LGA administration’s commitment to rural electrification, economic growth and community empowerment in Rivers West.
