Sahara Group’s Afam 2 Power Plant in Rivers State has increased power generation to 160 megawatts (MW), delivering a major boost to Nigeria’s national grid and advancing the nation’s push for reliable electricity supply.

Presidential Commissioning

The 180MW Afam 2 facility, commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 5, 2025, has quickly become a critical asset within Nigeria’s energy sector, supporting homes, businesses, and industries nationwide.

Commitment to Reliable Energy

Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, Dr. Kola Adesina, described the milestone as a testament to the company’s expertise and commitment to “bringing energy to life responsibly.”

“It is noteworthy that this achievement was recorded with zero downtime incidents, reflecting the technical excellence of the team on ground. We are proud of the team and our collective achievement,” Adesina said.

Sahara’s Expanding Energy Footprint

Sahara Power Group, a subsidiary of Sahara Group, is one of Africa’s foremost private power businesses. Its affiliates include Egbin Power Plc, the largest privately run thermal plant in sub-Saharan Africa; Ikeja Electric Plc, Nigeria’s biggest power distribution company; and First Independent Power Limited, a leading power generation firm in Nigeria.

Gas Supply and Infrastructure Upgrades

Adesina revealed that the ramp-up to 160MW was enabled by recent improvements in gas supply and ongoing infrastructure upgrades. He emphasized that Afam 2 plays a pivotal role in Sahara Group’s strategy to provide cleaner and more reliable energy solutions that foster socio-economic growth.

Alignment with Government Energy Goals

The achievement, Adesina explained, underscores Sahara’s alignment with the Federal Government’s energy transition agenda and infrastructure development priorities. “Sahara Group is grateful for the collaboration and support from regulators, stakeholders, and host communities in our bid to drive inclusive energy access across Nigeria,” he added.

With Afam 2’s enhanced output, Sahara Group reinforces its role as a key player in strengthening Nigeria’s energy security and expanding electricity access for millions of Nigerians.
