Sanwo-Olu Opens 16km Road Network to Unlock Badagry’s Tourism and Trade
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated seven road projects in Badagry, boosting infrastructure, easing transport, and strengthening the town’s position as a major tourism and economic hub.
The 16.4-kilometre network spans over eight communities in Badagry Local Government Area and Olorunda LCDA. Residents welcomed the development with cultural displays as the Governor commissioned the roads on Wednesday.
Key Roads Upgraded to Improve Access
The flagship project, Samuel Ekundayo-Toga Road, was expanded from a single lane to a dual carriageway with drainage, easing traffic from Marina into the heart of Badagry. Constructed in two phases, the road links Joseph Dosu Junction to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, with extensions reaching Aradagun-Mosefejo Road.
The road now functions as a strategic bypass, helping decongest Limca/Ibereko and Badagry Roundabouts.
Other commissioned roads include Aradagun, Mosafejo, Ilado, Imeke, and Hospital Roads—all designed to interconnect and improve intra-community mobility.
Infrastructure as a Tool for Inclusive Growth
Sanwo-Olu described the projects as part of his administration’s Urban Regeneration and Intermodal Transportation Strategy. He said the initiative aims to spread development across all parts of Lagos, leaving no community behind.
“Recognising Badagry’s rich history and tourism potential, we prioritised modern transport links that will open up this area to broader socio-economic activities,” he said. “These roads are not just infrastructure—they are lifelines for trade, tourism, and daily life.”
The Governor highlighted Badagry’s strategic role as a gateway to five West African countries and emphasised the need for better infrastructure to support both local business and regional integration.
Tourism and Market Access Get a Boost
The reconstruction of Hospital Road, in particular, aims to improve access to key landmarks such as Agbalata Market and tourist attractions including Nigeria’s first storey building, the Agiya Tree Monument, and the Badagry Heritage Museum.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents in Oko Afo, Ilogbo, Eremi, and Pota that road projects in their areas were ongoing, with efforts in place to speed up delivery.
Infrastructure that Drives Local Economy
Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola, said the new roads will reduce travel time, support business activities, and protect communities from flooding. He added that the projects align with the state’s long-term sustainability goals.
Chairman of Badagry LGA, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, praised the Governor’s commitment to grassroots development. “This intervention opens new doors for commerce, health, education, and tourism. It reflects true leadership that meets the needs of the people,” he said.
