Seplat Energy Plc, a leading indigenous energy company in Nigeria, has strengthened its commitment to media development with a two-day intensive capacity-building workshop for journalists in Imo State.
The training, held in Owerri, brought together 25 journalists from print and electronic platforms, offering them practical exposure to communication strategies, storytelling techniques, and the fast-evolving digital media ecosystem.
Seplat Reaffirms Commitment to Media Capacity Building
Speaking on behalf of the Director of External Affairs & Social Performance, Chioma Afe, the Manager of Corporate Communications, Stanley Opara, emphasized the company’s dedication to fostering media excellence and strengthening communication standards across the country.
“We consider excellence as cardinal in everything we do. The media plays a critical role in shaping narratives and culture, and that makes it important to embed global best practices in its delivery. Seplat Energy is fully aligned with this mission,” Opara said.
The Base Manager, Eastern Assets, Mr. Emmanuel Otokhine, encouraged journalists to maximize the opportunity, stressing the importance of adaptability and spontaneity in today’s fast-changing media space.
Training Highlights: Communication, MOJO & Digital Strategy
The workshop featured an in-depth session by Dr. Solomon Avbioroko, who explored the psychology of communication, the dynamics of professional interaction, and the value of self-awareness in journalistic practice. Participants engaged in interactive exercises designed to improve their storytelling and newsroom productivity.
Media consultant Mr. Nnamdi Uwaemulem led hands-on modules on report writing and mobile video journalism (MOJO), teaching participants how to craft compelling stories using only their smartphones—covering framing, lighting, shooting, and mobile editing. His second session, Media Transformation and Emerging Opportunities, opened participants to new income streams and entrepreneurship possibilities in a rapidly shifting media economy.
Another facilitator, Mr. Abiola Adedeji, guided attendees through Understanding Digital Marketing and Social Media Strategy, demonstrating how journalists can use analytics, data-driven storytelling, and platform-specific engagement strategies to amplify their work on X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and other digital spaces.
Journalists Commend Seplat’s Human Capital Investment
Participants described the training as transformative and timely, praising Seplat Energy for continually investing in the professional development of media practitioners. Many highlighted the practical nature of the sessions, especially the MOJO and digital strategy modules, as tools that will immediately enhance their fieldwork and content production.
The initiative reinforces Seplat Energy’s belief that a skilled and informed media is crucial to driving sustainable national development, strengthening public discourse, and shaping a more progressive society.
