Smart Energies Expands Into Renewables, Launches EVs and Subsidy Cards
By Naija Enquirer Staff
Smart Energies has unveiled a major expansion of its operations, moving beyond clean cooking gas to renewable energy and electric mobility solutions aimed at transforming access, affordability, and sustainability in Nigeria’s energy sector.
Driving Innovation in Energy Access
Under the new programme, the company rolled out electric motorcycles, solar-powered charging stations, cooking gas subsidy cards, and a mobile app designed to place clean and affordable energy at the fingertips of households and businesses.
Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Yinka Opeke, described the move as part of Smart Energies’ growth strategy, noting that the company is “redefining energy access by combining innovation, inclusivity, and social impact.”
Empowering Everyday Nigerians
With the launch of electric motorcycles, Smart Energies is targeting delivery riders and entrepreneurs by offering flexible rental and lease-to-own programmes ranging from daily to yearly payment plans. The initiative lowers the entry barrier for Nigerians to embrace clean mobility.
The company has also introduced prepaid subsidy cards to ease the cost of cooking gas for families, enabling access to clean cooking fuel at discounted rates. According to Dr. Opeke, the initiative was conceived to cushion households from economic pressures and prevent a return to harmful fuels such as firewood.
ESG Principles and SDG Alignment
Smart Energies says its expansion is guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The company highlights SDG 7 (clean energy), SDG 9 (innovation and infrastructure), SDG 11 (sustainable cities), and SDG 13 (climate action) as central to its mission.
“From our Trash-for-Gas campaign that distributed over 70,000 cylinders, to LPG safety training, and now renewable mobility, we continue to put people at the center of our operations,” Dr. Opeke said.
Digital Transformation and Partnerships
The newly launched Smart Energies Mobile App integrates services for drivers, clients, and retailers, offering real-time access to safe and clean energy solutions across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT.
Dr. Opeke emphasized the importance of partnerships, calling on governments, investors, development agencies, and private sector players to collaborate in scaling sustainable energy adoption. “Energy is the backbone of development. Together, we can create solutions that not only power economies but also uplift lives,” she said.
