The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed on Monday that a thunderstorm on September 3 snapped its 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line, leading to property damage but no disruption in power supply.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, said the snapped conductor fell near Tower 97, sparking a fire that destroyed a house, a parked vehicle, and killed two cows.
She explained that Tom Inugonum, TCN’s Regional Manager for Enugu, led a team to the site, while a Quick Response Line Maintenance Team has begun dismantling the damaged section in preparation for restringing a new conductor.
Mbah assured the public that electricity supply to the Nsukka area remained stable, as TCN rerouted power through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
The company expressed relief that no human lives were lost and warned citizens against encroaching on transmission line Right of Way (RoW), describing it as a dangerous practice that poses serious risks to lives and property.
“We urge the public to respect power infrastructure and comply with safety guidelines around transmission facilities. TCN remains committed to maintaining a stable and secure national grid while ensuring public safety,” Mbah stated.
