Tinubu Begins Official Visits to Japan and Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a two-nation official trip to Japan and Brazil, with a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Japan.
TICAD9 in Yokohama
In Japan, the President will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) holding in Yokohama from August 20–22. The summit, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, focuses on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation, strengthening business environments and institutions, and advancing a resilient, sustainable African society anchored on human security, peace, and stability.
Beyond plenary sessions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral meetings and meet CEOs of Japanese companies with existing or prospective investments in Nigeria to deepen trade and technology partnerships.
About TICAD
Launched in 1993 by the Government of Japan and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank, TICAD is a triennial forum alternating between Japan and Africa. The last edition was held in Tunisia in August 2022.
State Visit to Brazil
After TICAD9, President Tinubu will depart for Brasília for a two-day state visit (August 24–25) at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. While in Brazil, he will hold bilateral talks, participate in a business forum with Brazilian investors, and witness the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy, and technology.
The President will be accompanied by key ministers and senior government officials who will engage counterparts to strengthen sectoral partnerships.
