Tinubu Urges Christian, Muslim Leaders to Show Compassion to the Needy
By Naija Enquirer Staff
President Bola Tinubu has called on Muslim and Christian leaders across Nigeria to demonstrate greater compassion towards the poor and underprivileged by pursuing policies that directly address the needs of grassroots communities.
The President made the appeal on Monday in Abuja while hosting state governors for the breaking of an interfaith fast at the Presidential Villa. He noted that the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent underscores a shared humanity and presents an opportunity for reflection, unity, and service.
Faith, Discipline and Unity
According to President Tinubu, the overlapping seasons of fasting represent values such as discipline, sacrifice, resilience, and faith, which should inspire leaders to deepen efforts toward national unity and social welfare.
“Ramadan coinciding with Lent means discipline, sacrifice, faith, resilience, and strong determination to bridge together, pray together, and love one another,” the President said.
He urged leaders to extend humility, self-restraint, and love to their neighbours, emphasizing that more could be achieved in reducing poverty and empowering Nigerian youth.
Call for Grassroots Development
The President stressed the importance of inclusive development that transcends religious and ethnic divides.
“Development must not recognise religion. Compassion must not recognise tribe. Opportunity must not recognise status,” he stated.
He encouraged governors to expand development initiatives to local governments and underserved communities, particularly focusing on young people and vulnerable groups.
Security and State Police Reform
President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving national security, describing it as the foundation of prosperity.
“Without security, farms cannot flourish, businesses cannot grow, and families cannot sleep in peace,” he said.
The President reaffirmed plans to establish state police as part of broader reforms to combat insecurity, describing the move as practical rather than political.
“We must be bold enough to reform what is not working. We must be united enough to protect what we hold dear,” he added.
Governors Commend President’s Leadership
Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma commended the President for fostering national unity amid religious and ethnic tensions.
Uzodimma described the convergence of Ramadan and Lent as divinely inspired, noting that such an occurrence last happened over three decades ago.
He praised President Tinubu’s efforts in strengthening collaboration between the federal government and state governors, highlighting the importance of supporting the less privileged during the holy season.
Outlook for Nigeria
President Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, stating that the country is emerging from economic uncertainty.
“As long as we stay together, work together, and are determined to rescue this country, the best is yet to come for Nigeria,” he said.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to delivering on campaign promises, including poverty alleviation, youth empowerment, improved security, and structural reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economic and governance framework.
