At least 12 people were killed and three others abducted when gunmen attacked a mining site in Atoso village in Plateau State, central Nigeria, late on Tuesday.

Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, who heads the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), said the attackers struck the site at night, leaving five other victims hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

“This is a very tragic incident. Twelve lives have been lost, and three persons have been taken away by the assailants,” Mwantiri said, calling for urgent government intervention.

Police spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, confirmed that security agencies had commenced investigations into the attack, but did not immediately provide further details.

The latest incident occurred just days after four children were reportedly killed in a nearby community, further heightening fears among residents of renewed violence in the area.

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association has urged the government to deploy additional security personnel to affected communities, enforce the ban on open grazing, and intensify efforts to rescue those abducted.

Plateau State has experienced recurrent violence linked to communal tensions, banditry and attacks on rural settlements, with mining areas increasingly becoming targets due to their remote locations.
