The Women in Energy Network (WIEN) has praised the elevation of Dr. Philip Mshelbila as Secretary-General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, as President of the 2026 GECF Ministerial Meeting, describing both developments as strong validation of Nigeria’s leadership in the global gas space.
Appointments Mark Confidence In Nigeria’s Energy Vision
WIEN, a leading advocate for women’s advancement and inclusion in Africa’s energy sector, said the appointments underscore Nigeria’s growing influence, technical depth, and commitment to innovation, investment, and infrastructure development in the gas industry.
President of WIEN, Mrs. Eyono Fatai-Williams, said the dual achievements represent a “major vote of confidence in Nigeria’s strategic role in shaping global gas discourse.”
“These achievements highlight our nation’s technical competence, visionary leadership, and dedication to fostering cooperation and stability across the gas value chain,” she stated.
NLNG’s Role, Gender Inclusion Also Spotlighted
Fatai-Williams commended Dr. Mshelbila’s track record of excellence at Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), saying his appointment reflects “technical brilliance, consistency, and collaborative leadership.”
She also noted NLNG’s long-standing support for women’s empowerment and professional development through WIEN membership, describing it as a model for diversity and capacity development in the energy sector.
“NLNG’s commitment to gender balance and human capacity development reflects WIEN’s mission to build an inclusive and innovative energy industry,” she said.
Gas At The Heart Of Nigeria’s Development Agenda
Emphasizing natural gas as Nigeria’s pathway to industrialization and economic resilience, Fatai-Williams said the appointments reaffirm Nigeria’s role in advancing Africa’s energy transition and regional growth.
“Natural gas remains central to Nigeria’s economic transformation and energy security,” she noted. “These global roles strengthen Nigeria’s position as a dependable leader in driving clean energy, inclusivity, and sustainable development.”
WIEN expressed confidence that both leaders will represent Nigeria with distinction and work to strengthen cooperation and stability in the global gas market.
The Network said their emergence reflects international recognition of Nigeria’s technical capacity and commitment to equitable energy development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Nigeria will continue to champion equitable energy access and a cleaner energy future for Africa and the world,” Fatai-Williams concluded.
