A shocking case of alleged abuse has emerged in Abuja after police rescued a woman who was reportedly kept in chains inside a room for more than a year.
The victim, identified as 36-year-old Grace Aniekuoku, was discovered during a police operation that led to the arrest of her brother, Chinedu Aniekuoku. Authorities said the woman had spent about 16 months in confinement under appalling conditions.
Police Rescue Victim From Locked Room
According to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, officers acted on information received on June 12, 2026, about a woman allegedly being held against her will.
FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi told journalists in Abuja that detectives from the Katampe Division responded immediately after receiving the report.
However, the operation faced an obstacle when the suspect reportedly refused to allow officers into the residence. Police then relied on their legal authority to enter the property and carry out the rescue mission.
Sanusi explained that officers can lawfully force entry into a location when they are prevented from performing a legitimate duty.
Disturbing Conditions Shock Investigators
When officers finally gained access, they encountered a scene that left investigators deeply disturbed.
Police said the woman had been living in extremely poor conditions. She allegedly ate, slept, and relieved herself in the same confined space without proper care or attention.
Authorities also noted that the victim appeared severely malnourished. Her physical condition raised immediate concerns about her survival and long-term health.
Following the rescue, emergency arrangements were made to transport her to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Medical personnel are currently attending to her while investigators await an opportunity to obtain her account of what happened.
Alleged Motive Behind Confinement
Preliminary findings have uncovered a troubling reason for the woman’s prolonged captivity.
According to the police commissioner, the suspect allegedly took away his sister’s son about two years ago. The child has not been seen since then.
Investigators believe the woman may have been confined to prevent her from demanding answers or reporting the disappearance of her child.
Police also revealed concerns that the missing boy may have fallen victim to criminal activities, though authorities have not reached a final conclusion on the matter.
Search Intensifies For Missing Child
Security agencies have launched efforts to locate the missing child and determine exactly what happened.
Investigators are examining available leads while continuing to question the suspect. Authorities hope the ongoing inquiry will provide answers about the boy’s whereabouts.
Meanwhile, Chinedu Aniekuoku remains in police custody.
The FCT Police Command said it will file charges against him once investigators complete their work and gather all necessary evidence.
The case has generated widespread concern among residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.
