President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who was killed while in the custody of terrorists in Katsina State.
The President also extended condolences to the family of the late military officer and assured continued support for efforts aimed at securing the release of his wife, who remains in captivity.
Terrorists Demanded Release of Arrested Members
The Presidency revealed that the abductors of the retired general had demanded the release of their detained associates as a condition for freeing him.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that the Federal Government firmly rejected the demand, insisting that Nigeria would not bow to pressure from terrorists or criminal groups.
He added that the government remains committed to dismantling terror networks rather than negotiating concessions that would strengthen them.
Tinubu Reaffirms Hard Line Against Terror Groups
President Tinubu warned that the administration will not yield to any form of blackmail from armed groups, stressing that security agencies have continued to act against terror suspects nationwide.
He reiterated that those involved in terrorism and kidnapping will face the full force of the Nigerian state and not be granted concessions in exchange for hostages.
According to him, the government’s position is consistent: no negotiation, no surrender to terror demands.
Abduction and Tragic Outcome
The retired general was abducted on May 30 in Katsina State while travelling with his wife to his hometown. The kidnappers later released a video showing both captives and demanding the release of detained associates and seized livestock.
Despite efforts by security agencies, Abubakar died while still in captivity. His wife remains in the hands of the abductors.
National Mourning and Security Concerns
The incident has intensified concerns over rising insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping for ransom has become increasingly frequent.
Security analysts say the case highlights the urgency of improving intelligence-led operations and strengthening rapid response mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies.
The Federal Government has assured that efforts to combat terrorism and rescue remaining victims across the country will continue with renewed intensity.
