Associate of Kebbi APC Chairman Dies in Captivity, Raising Security Concerns

A grim development has emerged from Kebbi State, where one of two elderly men abducted alongside a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Koko/Besse Local Government Area has died. The deceased, Yahya, reportedly succumbed to the harsh conditions of captivity, heightening concerns for the surviving former chairman still held by the kidnappers.

Captives’ Pleas Ignored

Only days prior, a viral video showed both men appealing for urgent intervention. In it, the former APC chairman described the dire conditions and lamented what he called neglect from authorities. He warned that without swift action, their deteriorating health could have fatal consequences, a warning tragically validated by Yahya’s death.

Health Struggles and Harsh Conditions

According to the surviving captive, both men suffered from illness while in the forest hideout. Yahya’s condition had been serious for some time, and the former chairman faced worsening health due to lack of medication. They were also forced to navigate treacherous terrain, placing additional strain on their already fragile state.

Life in the Terrorists’ Camp

Details from captivity paint a harrowing picture: encounters with dangerous reptiles, exposure to the elements, and extreme living conditions. The surviving former chairman identified himself in the video when prompted, making a heartfelt appeal for the involvement of well-meaning individuals and authorities to secure their release.

Security Implications for Northwestern Nigeria

Experts warn that this incident highlights a broader security challenge in Kebbi and neighboring states. Kidnappings targeting politicians, community leaders, and ordinary citizens continue to threaten stability, underscoring the urgent need for stronger protective measures in vulnerable rural areas.

Awaiting Police Response

As of now, the Kebbi State Police Command has not issued a statement on Yahya’s death or the ongoing rescue efforts for the remaining captive. Efforts to obtain comments from the authorities have reportedly been unsuccessful.
