President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians from terrorism and criminal intimidation. The statement was delivered during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, as part of the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.
Akume congratulated Nigerians for 27 uninterrupted years of democratic governance, highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of citizens and pro-democracy activists who fought for the country’s return to democracy. He paid tribute to the June 12 heroes who endured persecution and, in many cases, death to ensure democratic rule.
Commitment to Socio-Economic Development
The SGF stressed that the government remains committed to fulfilling constitutional responsibilities and doubling efforts to alleviate the socio-economic challenges facing the populace. Recognizing issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement, Akume said Tinubu’s administration is actively addressing these problems with compassion and accountability.
Security Remains Top Priority
On security matters, Akume emphasized that ensuring citizens’ safety is paramount. Recent attacks and abductions were described as reminders that much work remains. He assured that the government supports security agencies with the necessary resources to secure communities, recover abducted persons, and preserve Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.
Call for Civic Responsibility
With political campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections intensifying, the SGF appealed to Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric. He specifically urged young citizens not to engage in thuggery, misinformation, or political manipulation, warning against trading conscience for temporary gain.
Akume also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society, the media, and families to encourage tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and responsible civic behavior as the nation approaches another election cycle.
Honouring the Armed Forces and Democracy Heroes
The SGF praised members of the Armed Forces and security agencies for safeguarding democratic institutions and sustaining peace. He urged citizens to honor the June 12 heroes by working toward a country where elections are peaceful, leaders are accountable, communities are safe, and all citizens can live with dignity
