The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has pushed back against comments made by Governor Douye Diri about the influence of incumbency in the 2027 elections. The party said it would not bow to political pressure or threats linked to those currently in power.
In a statement issued in Yenagoa, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ikaebimo Mark, reacted to Diri’s recent remarks that opposition parties would soon “learn the game of incumbency” as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin.
Mark insisted that the people of Bayelsa, not political office holders, would determine the outcome of future elections. He stressed that no government can override the collective decision of citizens who seek change and accountable leadership.
PDP Rejects Douye Diri’s Intimidation Ahead of 2027
According to the PDP spokesman, political events across Nigeria have shown that incumbency alone cannot guarantee victory at the polls. He explained that leaders who fail to maintain grassroots support often struggle when voters unite behind a common cause.
Mark added that the PDP continues to enjoy strong support from ordinary residents across Bayelsa State. He said the party’s strength comes from the people rather than temporary political power.
He also noted that the PDP, under the leadership of Hon. Alabh George Turnah, remains committed to building a political structure that reflects fairness, inclusion, and effective representation.
“The PDP remains deeply connected to the people of Bayelsa. The relationship was built through years of sacrifice, development, and commitment to the growth of the state and the Ijaw nation,” he said.
Party Highlights Grassroots Support
Mark stated that the party still enjoys the trust of youths, women, elders, workers, and community leaders across the state. He argued that many Bayelsans continue to identify with the ideals and direction of the PDP despite political challenges.
He warned residents against feeling intimidated by statements that suggest political dominance or invincibility. According to him, democracy belongs to the people, and voters remain the deciding force in every election.
The PDP also expressed confidence that Bayelsans would continue to support a party that, in its view, has defended their interests and encouraged political participation over the years.
Mark maintained that the party would stay focused on strengthening its grassroots movement while preparing for future political contests in the state.
