Seyi Makinde: Oyo governor picked as APM 2027 presidential candidate

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has been selected as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party confirmed his nomination after completing an internal affirmation process conducted by its leadership structure. According to the APM, the decision reflects its readiness for the upcoming national polls.

Makinde’s emergence adds another high-profile figure to the expanding list of individuals seeking the presidency in 2027.

However, his new political position has triggered mixed reactions in public discourse. Some commentators believe his focus should remain on state-level governance rather than national ambition.

Human rights lawyer Kola Alapinni is among those who expressed concern. He argued that the governor should prioritise security and stability in Oyo State instead of pursuing a presidential campaign.

Alapinni also questioned the effectiveness of security arrangements in the South-West region. He pointed to ongoing concerns surrounding Amotekun and other local security initiatives.

In response to such criticisms, Makinde has consistently defended the role of regional security structures. He maintains that Amotekun was created as a practical response to rising insecurity.

He further explained that the initiative became necessary after proposals for state police failed to gain approval. According to him, local cooperation remains essential in tackling security challenges across the country.
